Sony Vaio Eco VPC-W212AX 10 Inch Netbook

Going for a pearl white exterior the Sony Vaio Eco VPC-W212AX is a 10-inch netbook targeted at those seeking to reduce the impact on the environment by buying an eco-friendly laptop. As far as this aim goes, the Sony Vaio Eco VPC-W212AX is extremely successful as its pearl white chassis consists of 20% of CD and DVD cases. Coming in a shrink-wrap carry case that is made from recycled soda bottles with PET plastic, the laptop does its best at being an eco-friendly device and succeeds.

The color scheme is a rather unique as the outer chassis is white while the keyboard bezel is a very light metallic green, which looks quite nice once you get used to it. Sony has fitted it with a chiclet type keyboard all in gray, further adding to the unique color scheme. However, the keyboard keys are a bit too small and people with big fingers may just end pressing two keys instead of one if they’re not careful. The track pad is standard sized while the larger capacity battery juts out a little.

For its price the Sony Vaio Eco VPC-W212AX only offers entry-level netbook components starting with an Intel Atom N450 processor and 1GB worth of DDR2 memory. The 10.1-inch screen offers a higher resolution of 1366 x 768 but cannot play HD movies due to the integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics processor. The netbook does offer wireless-N wi-fi connectivity and a 250GB hard disk drive but for its price we were expecting a bit more. Other features are standard including a VGA port, Bluetooth 2.1 support, a card reader and three USB ports.

As mentioned earlier the Sony Vaio Eco VPC-W212AX isn’t really HD movie capable despite the higher resolution display. It even had problems with 480p HD movies with some stutter. However, the laptop makes up for it by offering a long battery life of more than six hours on a single charge. While the netbook can do general office work, Internet browsing and email, its multimedia capabilities are rather below par due in part to rather small speakers and the integrated graphics.

Overall, the Sony Vaio Eco VPC-W212AX is the perfect netbook for you if you want an eco-friendly laptop that can last a long time without charging. For its standard components it might be a little pricey compared to other notebooks in the same price range, however, its focus is more on its eco-friendly impact and energy efficiency. It will also turn heads, as the unique color scheme will definitely catch people’s eyes.
