Sony VAIO VPCX135KX – The Tiny and Agile Ultra-Portable Notebook
The Sony VAIO VPCX135KX surprises its user from the second it is taken out of the box. This mini laptop (or lifestyle PC as Sony calls it) catches the eye with its elegant lines and stylish looks. Its dimensions, 10.95 x 0.55 x 7.29 inches, and light weight (less than 1.60 lbs) make it even more attractive. However, we are not here to look at a laptop and tell the user it is good or bad. We are here to put the Sony VAIO VPCX135KX to the test and see whether or not it delivers what it promises. So, after carefully inspecting everything and testing all its components, we are happy to announce that this laptop is indeed what Sony promises. Let’s see why and how it passed our tests.
Its Intel Atom Z550 central processing unit (CPU) is a standard for almost all mini laptops and behaves quite well due to its 2.00 GHz clock speed and 512 kB L2 cache. It works on a relatively low front side bus (FSB) of just 533 MHz. It managed to pass our tests due to the high clock speed. However, its other characteristics slow it down, so we can only give it 6 out of 10 points. The Sony VAIO VPCX135KX has a standard and maximum memory of 2 GB (2 GB x1) DDR2 RAM working at a frequency of just 533 MHz. We understand that its size is an impediment to memory size, but its frequency should be higher for its price tag of $1499.99. The memory receives just 7 out of 10 points.
The hard disk drive manages to get some more points. The Sony VAIO VPCX135KX comes with a 128 GB PATA solid state drive (SSD). Although not very large, it is quite enough for a mini laptop, and earns its system another 8 out of 10 points. The Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500 integrated graphics processing unit is a standard to many mini laptops and performs well for its size. It is able to output high quality graphics at a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels on the 11.1 LED backlit display. We give it 9 out of 10 points for its versatility. The Intel High Definition Audio is a great addition and music lovers will benefit from crystal clear sound quality.
The integrated GPS, built-in Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband, and electro-static touchpad (with Multi-Finger capability) earn some bonus points. In the end, the laptop reaches the finish line with an overall score of 7.6, placing the Sony VAIO VPCX135KX in a top position on our mini laptops list.
