Sony VAIO Y Review – Ultra Portable and Highly Customizable
There are a few differences between the Sony VAIO Y and Z, and this is reflected in the prices. While Sony VAIO Z is more expensive, the two are comparable in many ways and, for the price it is offered at, the Y has many great features and should appeal to people on a budget.
Sony VAIO Y is an ultra-portable notebook as it weighs only 3.81 pounds when fitted with a standard capacity battery and 4.21 pounds when fitted with a larger battery. Moreover, it easily fits into a bag as it measures 12.8″x0.93″x8.9″. Yet this tiny notebook is loaded with powerful features. The processor is Intel Core i5-430UM (1.20GHz) 800Mhz 3MB L2 Cache while the standard system memory provided is 4 GB which can be upgraded to 8GB DDR3. The laptop comes with a hard disk drive of 500GB.
This notebook has excellent battery life as it will give you up to six hours with the standard battery and up to nine hours with the extended battery. Of course the number of hours depends on the tasks you make the laptop perform.
The color options available are many making this a very customizable laptop. Available colors include black, pink, green, blue, silver and violet. This ultra thin laptop also has a very generous provision of ports allowing you to connect many external devices. It has three USB ports, VGA port, LAN, FireWire, HDMI and audio jacks. There are also expansion slots which include an ExpressCard 34 slot and a MemoryStick card reader.
The chiclet-style keyboard of the Sony VAIO Y is easy and comfortable to work on with its responsive keys and fine spacing. However, unlike the keyboard of the Sony VAIO Z, it lacks a backlight. The touchpad has several multitouch features and is also very responsive. The laptop has a WXGA LCD screen which has a resolution of 1366*768 and this, though lower than what is available on the Sony VAIO Z, should prove good enough especially when you consider the extra cost that the Z comes at. The speakers in the VAIO Y provide good audio but you can get even better quality by using the headphone jack or by connecting to a stereo or HDTV using the HDMI port.
You could make great savings when buying this laptop by making use of Sony discount coupons. The coupons can be obtained instantly as they are available online.
